Patience is a virtue. It sure is if you look at the fishing image above, with the fisherman exercising patience waiting for his next catch.
Patience is usually something that happens behind closed doors so it often gets overlooked; the mother singing lullabies patting her child to sleep every night, the football player healing an injury, the child patiently waiting for the cupcakes to cool before they can eat one.
It is usually the impatient moment we see more publicly; frustrated customers or the impatient drivers on their way home from work.
The focus of this patience is a virtue article is to help you understand the importance of patience throughout your everyday life. Whether it be at work, running your own business, at home with your family or being patient with yourself when you are not losing the weight you wish to shed. Mastering the skill of patience can serve you in all areas of your life and it can result in very different outcomes to those you may be experiencing today.
Patience allows you to avoid making hasty decisions, stepping back and learning to be patient no matter what situation you find yourself in gives you time to process and face the situation in the present moment.
Unfortunately, in today’s world many of us have forgotten to be patient or feel as though we just don’t have the time for it. We tend to get frustrated quite quickly at all of the little things and forget how important it is to stop, be present and practice the virtue of patience. There are many benefits to being patient, here are just a few to help you to work at being patient throughout your everyday life.
Patience Is A Virtue Benefit 1 – Patience creates space for more empathy
Patience helps you to build more empathy towards others. By being patient with others you are less likely to become irritated by the way they act or the things they say and have more capacity to act more empathetic towards them. Patience can allow us the space to accept others for who they are and appreciate them without judgement or expectation.
Patience Is A Virtue Benefit 2 – Patience will do wonders for your relationship
Just think about how many times you have acted out of irritation, defensiveness a desire to be right. Now think of how many of these times would have looked very different if you had taken a moment to be patient, present and compassionate towards the other person. Instead we forget how important it is to be patient and end up making hasty decisions that hurt others and that we may regret. Whenever you find yourself feeling irritated by another person, remind yourself to be patient and take a moment to think things over and remember the positive qualities of that person, this awareness can make a world of difference within your relationships.
Patience Is A Virtue Benefit 3 – Patience makes you healthier
Patience is the antidote for things such as stress and anger, which are both states of mind that can be detrimental to your health and well-being. By practicing patience, you are able to face challenging situations with a calmer state of mind, therefore less stress, less anger and more flexibility to accept the outcome of the situation. Patience is a great tool to help with overcoming frustration and irritation, allowing us to suspend our judgement of others around us or the situations we find ourselves in, and make more informed decisions, therefore smoothing the path to a happy, healthy, harmonious life.
Patience Is A Virtue Benefit 4 – Patience promotes a positive attitude
If things are not going the way you want them to, instead of getting frustrated you must learn to be patient. You get to see things and situations in a positive light, therefore making your life happier, your body and mind healthier and you learn to use your positivity to create a peaceful environment not only for you but for the people around you. Let me leave you with a couple of tips which you can use to help you improve your patience in your daily life;
- Practicing mindfulness; this can help you to become less impulsive, gain more self-control and more willing to be patient and take time to stop before acting. One way you can practice being mindful is by taking deep breaths and becoming aware of the feelings of anger or frustration inside your body before you act impulsively.
- Practicing gratitude; If we learn to be thankful for what we have today, we find it easier to be patient with people or situations when they don’t necessarily go our way. As an example; if you are taking time to be grateful for what you have every day, you will find it easier to not react with anger if the kids are playing up because you will more easily be able to remind yourself of all the good in your life. You can practice gratitude by keeping a gratitude diary, simply write down 5 things that you are grateful for every day, and that way you are putting more focus on positive rather than negative.
Things very rarely turn out the way we had imagined them to, so having patience along your journey to success will make for a more enjoyable ride. Take it one step at a time, success is a journey not an event, be patient and embrace all that comes your way.
